You Need More Than Goals For 2010 - You Need A Plan

Too many of us come up with New Year's Resolutions or Goals and never follow through with any of them. You need a plan if you are going to accomplish your goals.

The first step is to write down your goals. Until you write down a goal it isn’t really a goal at all, it’s just wishful thinking. Step two is to write down at least five reasons why you want to achieve each goal. You need to understand why this goal is important to you.

Your goals must also be very specific. Your goal can't be to close more deals in 2010 than in 2009, it needs to be "I will close 30 deals in 2010".

Athough writing down your goals for 2010 is extremely important, you need to also write a plan for each goal for how you will achieve that goal.

For each of your goals write down:

  • The tasks required to reach the goal.
  • A due date for each task.
  • Make a list of detrimental behaviors that might prevent you from accomplishing these tasks. If you find yourself doing any of these detrimental behaviors, you can stop before it keeps you from achieving your goal.
  • A reward for yourself once you achieve the goal. We're all more motivated if we know we get a reward at the end of a lot of hard work.

It is also a good idea to have accountability partners to help keep you on track to reaching your goals. Many of us have a better chance of accomplishing our goals if we know we are accountable to someone other than ourselves. If we set goals and a plan to accomplish our goals, we can all enjoy a Prosperous and Happy 2010!
